For years people believed that white cats are born with blue eyes and deaf. The deafness is linked to the so-called W gene.
Of these white cats however 72 are deaf. This is especially important for white cats with blue eyes. The reason is the aforementioned W.
Whereas 40 of white cats with blue eyes are deaf it nonetheless means 60 arent so you shouldnt assume a cat is deaf simply because their eyes are blue and their coat is white. White cats with one blue eye the other is usually yellow or gold have about a 40 chance of being deaf in both or one ear. Their eye color is mainly due to a cellular issue.
Overall statistics indicate that. As we have mentioned previously not all white cats with blue eyes are prone to deafness. Two blue eyes completely deaf.
The deafness is linked to the so-called W gene. These hearing problems are not breed-specific so white blue-eyed Persians are as likely as other cat species to be deaf. In fact only 85 of white cats are born with blue eyes while the rest of the white cats are born with brown eyes or some other color.
